Spatial Metaphors for Visualizing Very Large Data Archives

چکیده

As people try to cope with massive amounts of electronic infoffi1ation, browsing through very large archives can frustrate and eventually impede the retrieval of infoffi1ation. The paper presents an approach to search catalogs of very large electronic archives, that combines computer visualization with the descriptive and analytical power of geography. This method is called "spatialization", referring to the application of spatial (and visual) metaphors for organizing large volumes of infoffi1ation that are not necessarily spatial in nature.

Spatialized Browsing in Large Data Archives

Exponentially growing data archives emphasize the need for efficient techniques and novel approaches to find and extract information. Information visualization has emerged in the Information Retrieval domain to facilitate access to large databases. This development acknowledges the need to focus on higher level cognitive processes in information seeking. Graphic depictions of large databases ar...

Denali: A tool for visualizing scalar functions as landscape metaphors

Many sources of data in machine learning, such as probability distributions and cost functions, can be summarized by extracting tree-like structures. These trees, however, are often large enough so as to be difficult to visualize with traditional methods. In this paper, we present denali, an interactive interface with novel features for visualizing landscape metaphor representations of trees, a...

Handling Data Spatially: Spatializating User Interfaces

The impact of GIS research extends beyond GIS. Our expertise about space, spatial relations, and spatial knowledge needs to be shared with other domains who can benefit from it, even if their problems are not inherently spatial. This paper discusses the needs for spatial expertise in the field of human-computer interaction. Modern user interface design increasingly employs spatial metaphors to ...

Envisioning User Access to a Large Data Archive

We are overwhelmed by the vast amounts of data accumulating daily. The extraction of information from online data sources is becoming more and more difficult. For example, if a query to a large archive returns hundreds of “hits”, the most effective presentation is probably not a list of items, but some other type of graphical display. The concept of spatialization offers a promising potential t...

Spatial Metaphors for Visualizing Information Spaces

The growing volume and complexity of the World Wide Web creates a need for new forms of interaction with information. Spatial metaphors have been in the focus of interface research for a number of years. Recently, a related concept called spatialization has emerged as one possible strategy for dealing with modern information glut. However, the term remains ill-defined. We present a definition o...
